Cypripedium reginae

A strong growing garden orchid growing up to 90 cm in height. 3 to 8 broad-leafed, light-green leaves on straight, stiff shoots. The leaves are 10 to over 20 cm long and 5 to 15 cm wide, covered with hairs. From mid-May to mid-June, 1-3 unique trap-shaped flowers in the shape of slippers develop on the tops of the shoots. The boot (shoe) is very impressive, the size of a hen's egg, pale pink to maroon, with white streaks, perianth leaves are snow-white. A single flower is over 10 cm in diameter.
Easy to grow orchid requiring moderately moist, slightly acidic and humus substrate prepared from porous additives, such as expanded clay aggregate, perlite, vermiculite, seramis. Prefers shady and partially shady locations. Plant fully resistant to frost (zone 4).Perennial recommended for growing in home gardens.

Breader: North American species, cultivated by orchid collectors for many years, but virtually unknown on a larger scale and rarely available in perennial nurseries.
